The Mystery Radar Headed For Iraq
May 30, 2011: For a year now, Iraq has been trying to get radars and missile systems for air defense. Not much in the way of details have become public. It recently became known that a U.S. manufacturer was supplying Iraq with a long range radar. But the U.S. Air Force, which was handling the purchase for Iraq, refused to allow any details on the radar to be released. All that is known is that it's a "long range radar" and the purchase will cost $26 million. Given that the manufacturer (Lockheed Martin) is known, the most likely candidates are the AN/FPS-117, or the mobile version, the AN/TPS-77. However, both of these cost more than $26 million, so perhaps even the financing is not being made public.
The AN/TPS77 is a portable military radar that can cover out to 450 kilometers, and up to 33 kilometers (100,000 feet) altitude. You can set up the phased array (AESA) radar panel in a remote location, and have the radar information, and the status of the radar, monitored elsewhere. The AN/TPS-77 operates, on average, about 11 weeks before needing the attention of any technicians. The entire system can be moved using three tractor trailers. These trailers can be moved by air as well.
The other candidate is the AN/TPS-59(V)3B. This radar has a 700 kilometer range and up to 152 kilometers (500,000 feet) altitude. It can be used for air traffic control, as well as in conjunction with Hawk and Patriot anti-aircraft missiles, as well as AEGIS anti-aircraft systems used on American warships.
Either way, Iraq is seeking a radar that can look deep into its neighbors, particularly Iran. The big mystery here is, why all the secrecy? Whichever radar Lockheed supplies, it will use the same AESA technology. And Iraq is desperately seeking to build an air defense system. So Iraq is probably not getting Lockheed's new 3DELRR radar, which won't be shipping for a few years.

it is an AN TPS77 like the radars installed already in Tkirit, Baghdad and Nassiriya.

حسب علمي انه من انتاج شركة لوكهيد مارتن (نفس الشركة التي تصنع الـF-16 ) بعقد قيمته 26 مليون دولار و هو رادرا ثلاثى الابعاد و يعمل بنطاق L-Band

I think we deal with this subject but I don't know where some where in our forum ..
any way i think iraq will adopt the same strategy of Nation wide air defence system in the same manner of the 80' which mean iraq will divided into four sector but the question why in Ali Airbase - Nassyriah not for Baghdad ..?

The AN/FPS-117 is a phased array, 3-dimensional air search radar. It is produced by the Lockheed Martin corporation from the United States.
The system is a low power, long range (200-250 nautical miles), L-band pencil beam, solid-state transmitter and beacon interrogator search radar. System design includes a redundant architecture with computer software remote controlled and monitored operations to minimize manning requirements.
The AN/FPS-117 is in use as part of the American-Canadian North Warning System of radars stretching across North America from Alaska via Canada to Greenland. This North Warning System is designed to provide long-range detection and coverage for drug interdiction support and tactical command and control.
Implementation of the North Warning System has resulted in a reduction in Operations and Maintenance (O&M) spending by up to 50% compared to previous systems. Due to extreme northern locations of these radars, the physics of radiowave propagation in the 1215-1400 MHz frequency range is even more critical for target detection requirements. The Air Force and the FAA also operate a limited number of AN/FPS-117 radars within the continental United States. The AN/FPS-117 radar is capable of randomly hopping among 18 channels in the 1215-1400 MHz band.
It is in operation in several other countries including Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Croatia, Denmark, Estonia, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Kuwait, Latvia, Pakistan, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, Jordan.

Iraq bought another Radar from Loockheed Martin

Iraq has ordered a new radar system from the US worth 28 million from Lockheed Martin , the DID article is not sure which Radar System Iraq ordered, in fact Iraq ordered the AN/TPS-77 long-range air surveillance radar system. Why? because this is the third Radar Iraq has ordered, the first was in 2006 the second in 2009 , and now the third 2011. The most interesting thing is that the 2009 order specifies that the Radar is in fact AN/TPS-77

The Iraqi airforce now deploys the Raytheon DASR 11 system.
The DoD/FAA's ASR-11 DASR is the next generation solid-state, terminal area air traffic control radar.
Primary Surveillance Radar (PSR) coverage to 60 miles, and Monopulse Secondary Surveillance Radar (MSSR) coverage to 120 miles. The system meets all current FAA, DoD, ICAO, and Eurocontrol surveillance requirements. DASR is highly modular and readily re-configurable. It is designed for unattended operation using redundant subsystems with built-in test equipment and can be fully controlled and monitored from multiple locations.
The Digital Airport Surveillance Radar (DASR) is a terminal air traffic control radar system that replaces current analog systems with new digital technology. The DASR system detects aircraft position and weather conditions in the vicinity of civilian and military airfields. The Government nomenclature for this radar is the ASR-11. The ASR-11 will replace existing ASR-7, ASR-8 and AN/GPN-12, -20 and -27 systems. These older radars, some up to 20 years old, are being replaced to improve reliability, provide additional weather data, reduce maintenance cost, improve performance, and provide digital data to new digital automation systems for presentation on air traffic controller displays.
The ASR-11 system consists of two electronic subsystems: a primary surveillance radar and a secondary surveillance radar, sometimes called the beacon. The primary surveillance radar uses a continually rotating antenna mounted on a tower to transmit electromagnetic waves which reflect or backscatter from the surface of aircraft up to 60 miles from the radar. The radar system measures the time required for a radar echo to return and the direction of the signal. From this data the system can then measure the distance of the aircraft from the radar antenna and the azimuth or direction of the aircraft from the antenna. The primary radar also provides data on six levels of rainfall intensity. The primary radar operates in the range of 2700 to 2900 MHz. The transmitter generates a peak effective power of 25 kW and an average power of 2.1 kW. Average power density of the ASR-11 signal decreases with distance from the antenna. At distances of more than 43 feet from the antenna, the power density of the ASR-11 signal will fall below the maximum permissible exposure levels established by the Federal Communications Commission.

شفقنا - بغداد / اعلنت لجنة الأمن والدفاع البرلمانية العراقية عن البدء بمراقبة اجواء العراق بعد نصب رادارين كبيرين في الناصرية والتاجي. وقال عضو اللجنة النائب ابراهيم المتيوتي :"ان هذين الرادارين من المنشأ الاميركي يغطيان جميع اجواء العراق، اضافة الى جزء من مساحات دول الجوار كالسعودية والكويت وسوريا وايران وتركيا، اضافة الى جزء من مساحة الاردن.وأضاف المتيوتي انه "تم ربط هذين الرادارين مع القيادة في مركز العمليات ببغداد"، مشيرا الى ان هذين الرادارين لهما القدرة على كشف الطائرة منذ اقلاعها حتى هبوطها فضلاً عن معرفة جميع تفاصيل ارتفاعها ونوعيتها اذا كانت مدنية او عسكرية.
وكشف عن وجود صفقة لاستيراد منظومة صواريخ تربط على منظومة الرادارات هذه كجزء من خطة الدفاع الجوي العراقي.

The progress in radar capabilities seems pretty good. In Air Defense, more than any other service, information is power.
Seeing the first live fire exercise is heartwarming, even though these guns provide near negligible operational capability....Again, information first, shooters come later.

بوجود لجنة الامن والدفاعـ الموقرة التي تتكلم عن اعراف عسكرية لم اسمع بها من قبل وخاصة عندما تكلم
حسن السنيد عن ان العراق سوف يسقط اي مقاتلة معادية تخترق اجواءه "عن طريق اسلحته الخارقة" لذلك هي غير موثوق بها بتاتا
الدفاع الجوي العراق يحتاج لسنوات لكي يكتمل في تغطية 80% للاجواء العراقية
للعلم العراق عرض عليه الهوك
لكنه رفض واكيد وللاسف يبحث عن الباتريوت ..مع ان الباتريوت لم ينجح بشكل متكامل في حرب الخليج

الامن النيابية تقر بعدم فاعلية الرادارات الداخلة في الخدمة
بغداد / المركز الخبري لشبكة الاعلام العراقي - اعلنت لجنة الامن والدفاع البرلمانية عن تقريرها الفني بشان الرادارات المنصوبة في الناصرية والتاجي مؤكدة إنها غير فعالة ولا تؤدي خدمة على الاطلاق .
وقال عضو اللجنة حاكم الزاملي لـ(المركز الخبري لشبكة الاعلام العراقي) ان الرادارات التي تم نصبها في قاعدة الامام علي (ع) وفي التاجي غير فعالة ولا تؤدي اي خدمة على الاطلاق".
واضاف ان " السبب في ذلك يعود الى عدم ملاءمتها للاجواء العراقية، حيث ترتفع درجات الحرارة وتكثر العواصف وينقطع الكهرباء بصورة مستمرة و عدم وجود متخصصين في هذا المجال والضغوط الامريكية هي التي دفعت الى شراء رادارات امريكية، حيث كان من المفترض شراء رادارات شرقية تناسب البيئة العراقية".
واوضح "هذه الرادارات تحتاج الى كهرباء مستمرة، وفي حال انقطاعها يجب اعادة برمجة الحاسبات من جديد، ما يعني الحاجة الى الخبراء الامريكان باستمرار".
وطالب باستخدام الرصد البصري كتعويض عن الرادارات غير المفيدة.
وتم نصب رادارين مطلع العام الحالي بعد مغادرة القوات الامريكية وتغطي منظومة الكشف 60% فقط من الاراضي العراقية.
وتستخدم العديد من الدول المتدمة عسكرياً طريقة الرصد البصري مثل روسيا وايران.

how much would it cost them to install two generators for each radar with automatic switchover? $50,000?
these radars work fine for saudi arabia who use the same type in the same weather...
