Re: War with Iran - opening stage 1980-82
I want to use this thread to count the "total" losses that Iraq sustained during the 1980-88 war.
The project is aimed at establishing the true losses that Iraq incurred in the war.
Thankfully we have the official Iraqi record for "1990-1991" to guide us.

Re: Losses of Iraqi aircraft 1980 - 88
Putting Iraq's losses into perspective.
During an 8 year war, in which Iraq flew more than 5x more combat sorties into "enemy" territory than Iran, Iraq managed to lose LESS aircraft than Iran.
This illustrates the massive discrepancy in the air defence capabilities of both nations, as well as their abilities to avoid being shot down.
Even at the "worst" case scenario of losing 150 aircraft over 8 years (almost 3000 days of combat), that averages:
1 aircraft lost every 20 days of war.
For an airforce the size of Iraq's (as it was then, a relatively large airforce) sustaining such losses purely on routine training and CAP would have not been untoward. Let alone flying a minimum of 100 (and sometimes up to 600) combat missions EVERY DAY, against an enemy equipped with both a large BVR-AAM equipped fleet of fighters as well as a very large network of modern SAMs.

Regarding combat missions: the newspaper "Al Qadisiyah" quoted Iraqi air force commander Hamid Shaaban as saying Iraqi warplanes had flown 11 015 combat missions in the period from 1-jan-1987 to 23-apr-1987. For comparison Shaaban gave info that during whole 1985 year IqAF flown 24 000 combat missions and in 1986 flown 31 144 combat missions.

Re: Losses of Iraqi aircraft 1980 - 88
hi Nissan 28.
thanks for your valuable input.
I double checked the data. the number of Mirage F1 SINGLE seaters was 76 (this is also excluding the 8 kuwaiti examples Iraq captured in 1990).
The total number delivered was either 93 or 95. The remaining was 76, so between 1981-1990 a total of 17-19 aircraft were lost to all causes including accidents.
Of course Iraq also had 15 two seaters, of which I believe 3 crashed in various mishaps in the 1980s, which brings the total "written off" to 19-22 airframes.
however there is one potential issue in the official iraqi numbers because the number of single seaters that flew to Iran was maybe 22 not 24 (since 2 dual seaters also flew there).

Re: Losses of Iraqi aircraft 1980 - 88
with regards to the numbers of combat missions, its very interesting.
1985 - 24000 - 65 on average per day
1986 - 31100 - 85 on average per day
1987 (4 months) - 11000 - 95 on average per day
so the number of combat sorties per day was increasing at the rate of around "10 additional daily sorties" per year.
if we use 1985 as the "median" figure then we can see that Iraq flew maybe around 200k combat sorties during the entire war? That would be an aircraft loss rate of less than 1 aircraft per 1300 combat sorties.
