BETHESDA, Md., Feb. 24 (UPI) -- Intelsat General Corp. of Maryland has received a subcontract from 3Di Technologies to provide the Iraq military with satellite communications.

The company said that under the award it will provide satellite connectivity for 150 VSAT remote terminals of the Iraq Ministry of Defense network.

Nearly a full transponder of capacity on Intelsat's IS-901 satellite, with connectivity through a teleport in Maryland, will be provided to the iDirect network of 150 terminals, Intelsat said.

"Even though American forces have left Iraq, there is an ongoing need for satellite coverage of the region," said Intelsat General President Kay Sears. "Having connectivity through our satellite network will enable the Iraqi military to maintain communications throughout a wide area."

The value of the subcontract wasn't given. However, Intelsat said it is part of a larger indefinite-delivery/indefinite-quantity award given to 3Di Technologies by the U.S. Army Communications and Electronics Command, Foreign Military Sales branch, and worth $80 million.

3Di Technologies is a subsidiary of L-3 Communications Corp. Intelsat General Corp. is an indirect, wholly owned subsidiary of Intelsat S.A.

Iraq is acquiring radios and accessories from both the Harris Falcon II and Falcon III families for its security forces. The RF-5800M-HH is an advanced, multiband, multi-mission handheld radio that provides voice and data in the 30 MHz to 512 MHz frequency range. The RF-5800H is a high-frequency manpack radio for secure, reliable beyond-line-of-site terrestrial communications.
