Iraq has bought 500 new upgraded MTLBs from Bulgaria. I presume these are intended for the divisions operating in the south east of Iraq (marshy areas).

On the very first day of the exhibition, the sale of 500 Bulgaria-made armored vehicles to Iraq was contracted to tune of EUR 75 million and special defense equipment for Algeria worth the total of EUR 35 million.

The MTLB in Iraq history:
These vehicles were brought by Iraq during the 1980s in order to operate in marshy terrain, these vehicles have the lowest ground-pressure of any armoured vehicle (to this day) and for certain divisions of the Iraqi army (especially 10th div based in amara/nassiriya) there really is no alternative.

Iraq did setup an assembly plant for the MTLB in the late 1980s and there's a lot of expertise in their use in Iraq. Iraq operated over a 1000 of these in the past, and today they still have about 50-100 operational.

buying 500 (I don't know if these are new build or second hand?) is good for mechanising 2 divisions (in the marshy areas). there the BTR4 / BMP1 / M113 / MRAP etc would be useless (they would sink).

It is important to know exactly what spec they bought, and if they at least bought some upgraded armour to improve survivability.

و الله ...يا عزيزي حيدر ... لا يوجد في النت مايشير الى قيام بلغاريا بتطوير او تعديل العربات هذه و الصور المتوفرة عن العربة في القوات البلغارية توضح ان الاستخدام للعربة القياسية التي خدمت بأعداد كبيرة في الجيش العراقي قبل الاحتلال عام 2003 كذلك من مصدر خبري آخر يذكر انه سيتم ارسال عربة واحدة من مصنع تيريم في مدينة تارغوفيتشا البلغارية الى العراق لاجراء الاختبارات عليها... ولانك مهتم بأسعار الاسلحة فان الخبر يشير الى ان سعر العربة الواحدة يبلغ 300 الف يورو اي ما يعادل نصف مليون دولار للعربة الواحدة حسب سعر التصريف الحالي ؟

Bulgaria to Sell 500 Armoured Personnel Carriers to Iraq

The Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borisov, has reportedly negotiated a deal for the supply of 500 MT-LB armoured vehicles to Iraq.

According to a report from the Bulgarian Telegraph Agency (BTA), the deal was sealed on Thursday in the presence of Iraq’s Acting Minister of Defence, Sadun al-Dulaymi Minister, (Sadoun al-Dulaimi), at the Hemus 2012 International Military Equipment Exhibition.

The vehicles have a price tag of EUR 300,000 each, making the deal worth EUR 150 million.

The Prime Minister said that the MT-LB armored vehicles had been produced in Terem‘s plants in Targovishte and one MT-LB would shortly be sent to Iraq for tests.

tango. the iraq-business news are wrong. the official bulgarian agency said that the total price is 75M euros (150k euros each). they made the mistake with the exchange rate from BGN-euro! iraqbusiness-news usual bad mistakes.

Bulgaria has negotiated the sale of 500 armoured vehicles to Iraq for a total value of BGN 150mn (EUR 76.7mn), BTA Daily News reported, citing PM Boyko Borisov. The MT-LB multi-purpose tracked vehicles are by TEREM Turgovishte, part of state-owned TEREM EAD, active in the repair of armament and equipment. Additionally, state-owned Kitex, exporter of military equipment, is about to finalise a EUR 35mn deal for special-purpose equipment export to Algeria, as well as close to sealing a deal for sale of equipment valued at EUR 28.1mn (BGN 55mn).




with regards to "Upgrades" I don't know what upgrades the bulgarians made to the vehicles destined for Iraq. website for the company has no information.

Bulgarian Telegraph Agency informed that Boyko Borisov, prime-minister of Bulgaria signed a deal to supply 500 light armoured MTLB APCs to Iraq.

Decision to sign the contract was made on May, 31, 2012 in the presence of Sadoun al-Dulaimi, Iraqi acting Minister of Defence at Hemus 2012 International Defense and Security exhibition.

After the exhibition opening Borisov informed that the cost of the vehicles to be supplied to Iraq shall amount to around 300,000 levs per unit and total cost of the contract shall amount to 150 mln levs (appr. USD 77 mln). He also mentioned that MTLB APCs were produced at Terem plant in Tyrgovishte town and one MTLB will be sent to Iraq to undergo trials.

Borisov also said that 36 mln euro deal for supply of special-purpose Kintex equipment from Bulgaria to Algeria will be completed soon.

In addition he offered Liu Sheng, deputy Director of People's Liberation Army General Armaments Department to purchase ball ammunition. Borisov joked that one bullet for each Chinese soldier would be enough.

Bulgarian prime-minister called on all countries present at the exhibition to purchase Bulgarian weapon systems, he underlined that they have never received any quality reclamation.

Prime contractor for MTLB to Iraq will be Terem-Khan Krum tank repair plant, Tyrgovishte, Bulgaria. The plant is a part of Terem EAD association which is subordinated to Ministry of Defence of Bulgaria.

The supplied vehicles will be discarded from service in Bulgarian army. Prior to delivery the vehicles will be overhauled and upgraded. The full scope of the upgrade was not unveiled but it is known that rubberized tracks will be installed as well as system designed by Bulgarian Politechnika firm which includes air-conditioner with auxiliary power unit that ensures comfort conditions for the crew in hot climate over a long period of time without giving additional load for the vehicle's main engine

So 500 of these will probably be more than enough to mechanize the 10th IA Div, and maybe part of the 14th , right?

That's true, Tango--I was speculating within the context of what we heard in the past about the plans for the mechanization of infantry divisions. Other than the 9th Div (which some consider armored, others consider mechanized) there has been no mention (as far as I know) of additional armored divisions in the near term plans.

the 9th is currently mechanised. Other divisions are being trained to accept armour in future (i believe 8 divisions are being rotated through the armour training school). of course there is still a mystery as to what tanks will be bought for them!

و عادة يمكن أستخدام اي شاصي عربة مدرعة لتكون منصة لحمل أي سلاح متوفر مع حساب حمولة العربة المفيد ووزن السلاح والأمثلة كثيرة
