We've discussed the possibility of Iraq recieving BMP3s over the years.

Now there's some unconfirmed reports of BMP-3s delivered to Iraq.

however since kurganmash is bankrupt, it throws into doubt the authenticity of the algerian web sites claim.

BMP 3 for Iraqi army

The Iraqi army has recently received a batch of about 10 BMP 3 armored vehicles, which have been concomitant with the delivery of T90S and SK tanks. Iraq received last week a first batch of 10 T90 S and SK on the 73 ordered.

Our sources in Russia confirmed the beginning of the order’s delivery, of a batch of BMP 3s, amongst the dozens expexted to be delivered in the near future. It is worth remembering that Iraq had ordered in 2015 500 units of this armored vehicle.

The first export customer for this product was the United Arab Emirates, which received 330 vehicles between 1992 and 1995. Kuwait also recently had 200 BMP 3. Saudi Arabia have ordered 900 in 2015, this order was not confirmed yet.

Feedback from the United Arab Emirates use of the AIFV has pushed the Russians to develop a new version of the BMP 3 called Dragun. This variant has a motor at the front and a ramp for the rapid deployment of the soldiers in the rear.

The BMP 3 has the ability to carry up to 9 servicemen and has a heavy armament for its category. A 100 mm gun, to which is added a 30 mm coaxial gun and three PKT secondary machine guns.

could this be a BMP-3 for Iraq at the factory?

It has the upgraded sights, and "iraqi style" cammo.

If it is the Iraqi version, I hope they add the extra armor packages or reactive armor packages. The basic armor is too thin and an RPG can easily destroy them.

I wonder to what extent the iraqi army considers the upcoming BMP-3 as an alternative to having MBTs in the infantry divisions.

I would think they'd rely on ATGMs for pure anti tank work, and have BMP-3s for "fire support" (and an ability to carry some infantry as a bonus).

Perhaps that's the reason the stated contract from 2014 was for 500 units? 2x battalions of these per infantry division?

35 x 2 = 70 per division
500 units = enough for 7 infantry divisions and 10 for the armour training school.

With a unit cost of about $3M - they're certainly not cheap... but have a better fire support capability than MBTs, and double up as IFVs.

none are delivered yet. In terms of numbers. I believe the initial batch is 70 BMP-3s.

We don't know which unit will receive them... I would make a guess 9th Division 37th Brigade!

here are some more pictures of the Iraqi configuration of the BMP-3

This is a slightly downgraded version of the BMP-3M. We can see that it does not include the upgraded panoramic sights!

Iraqi army is consistently refusing to buy modern panoramic sights for their top end armour... from the M1 to the T90 and now the BMP3!
