After reading your comments on the conduits, I put the profiles of the early fitters together and I think you are right! The Su-20 as in the profiles by Tom Cooper (from Aviation Graphic and also in "Iraqi Fighters") show no conduits and thinner engine! *facepalm*
What really got me thinking that the engine was the AL-7F is that the text specifically mentioned that the first Fitters had this engine. Unless the profile is incorrect I think that this case is closed!
Regarding the R-29 vs Al-21 I failed to register that fact... I was under the impression it was not supposed to fall into "foreign" hands as this engine was based on the US J-79 (supplied to the USSR by Vietnam from F-4s shot down).
Well, I guess stand corrected...
