Iraq received its first nine Tu-16s from the USSR, in 1961. They entered service with No.10 Squadron, based at Habbaniyah AB, back then.

Can anybody say what was the name of the squadron commander of that unit as of June 1967?

I know he flew the first of two Tu-16s that bombed Ramat David AB in Israel on the morning of 6 June (second day of the war). That Tu-16 hit its target and returned to Iraq safely, but I do not know any names of its crew

BTW, the second Tu-16 that attacked about one hour later, first missed its target and then got shot down by Mirages and MIM-23 HAWKs. That's where I have at least four names of the crew (the pilot was a Kurd), if anybody is interested.

Yes their story would be very interesting Tom!

PS. I read on ACIG about a new book you're planning on the tanker war with details of TU16/B6D operations? can you let us know some idea about when that book will be out?

Hayder,
yes, we are working on a book about Tanker War, and it's likely to become quite a nice, very richly illustrated volume. But, that's going to take 2-3 years longer to get ready for publishing.

BTW, please note that the IrAF Tu-16s apparently did not take part in that phase of the war with Iran: only (Chinese-made) H-6Ds (armed with C.601 - apparently also with C.611 anti-ship missiles). It is possible that one or two Tu-16s was used as a tanker for Mirages, nevertheless.

Tango,
many thanks for the names of the first Tu-16 that flew the attack on Israel on 6 June! Really, much appreciated, since I was missing that information.

As is known, Iraq was used Tu-16 Badger's in the early stages of the war as bombers and was one of these planes had been shot down in the city of Senadj near the Iranian capital(23-09-1980). In the later stages the Iraq did not use this plane in the war in. I do not think that Iraq was using the Badger as an aircraft tanker for Mirage F 1. Iraq has received what was believed to 4 H-6D (Chinese-made of Tu-16) aircrafts from China in leat 1987 in the final phase of the war and who probably was not used in the war as well.

According to people in both sides of the war, the B6D was indeed used to attack ships in the Arabian Gulf, they were either go alone (with fighter escorts) or withing strike packages that may include another bombers...

Also there is an Iranian claimed that one of these bombers were downed over the Gulf, along with en route missile by an F-14 Tomcat!

Oh darn, here's the Badger thread...

In a copy over from the Tu-22 thread... I'd like to ask if anybody knows if it is true that Iraq received 6 instead of the normally reported 4 B-6D / B-60 Badgers for their air force.

In addition, does anybody know if the Iraqi Tu-16s (the Soviet built ones) were ever equipped with ASMs such as the AS-5 / KSR-2/11 Kelt or AS-6 / KSR-5 Kingfish?

Thanks in advance!

Regards,

Sander

Iraqi aircraft Tu-16s Soviet-made were not equipped to carry missiles and were not used for that purpose of launching missiles and have been used in the bombing bay bombs Freefall only opertations.
