I don't think it reached the mass production phase back then, because the tests flights were at the end of 2002

Did Jet Provosts enter service with the Flying School?

I though they were operated by the Flying Leaders School and also used for weapons training - even for COIN purposes during the fighting with Kurds?

BTW, don't forget that the RIrAF also obtained Chipmunk basic trainers, back in the mid-1960s. They remained in service with the Flying College and then the Academy (first at Rashid AB, later at Wahda AB, and then in Tikrit), until the early 1970s. Most of IrAF pilots trained in the 1960s soloed on them as first.

Correspondingly, during the 1960s and early 1970s, the training of IrAF jet fighter pilots looked something like this:

- Basic training
1.) Chipmunk
2.) L-29
3.) MiG-15UTI

- Advanced Training
4.) Jet Provost

- Weapons Training
5.) Jet Provost (later L-39)

- OCU
6.) Hunter (or MiG-21)

- Flying Leaders School (Tactical School)
7.) Jet Provost
6.) Hunter

I think that Iraq had used Jet Provost aircraft as an basic to advanced training in the period from 1964 until the L-29 entering service in the Air Force College, may be the beginning of the seventies of the last century or before that.
I remember when was a flying college in Basra, Alshwiba /Alwihda Air Base Jet Provosts were flying the every day over our heads in the training sorts.

I personally don't think Iraq using these aircrafts (Jet Provost) for combat missions, but I think it's used for armed training. The last time I saw a Jet Provost it was in 1988 over the Rashid Air Base and this means that they were out of the air force academy, which was in Tikrit.

In 1974, we visited the air base Alshuiba /Alwihda has offered us some of the aircrafts Iraqi air force academy which had been transported to Tikrit, have brought the aircraft specially for us there was a Jet Provost, as well as one white L-39.

Can be said that Iraq had used piston aircraft in primary / initial training, and jets type aircraft for bisic to advanced training.

Air Marshal S Raghavendran as a flying instructor in Iraq on his diray in the period 1963-1965, the aircrafts used at the time was:-

Percival Provost
Jet Provost - efter 1964
Vampire + Mig-15UTI and MiG-17

The first batch of L-29s entered service with the Air Academy in September 1968. The second batch arrived in 1970.
