Iraq 100 were ordered in 1973 from the Soviet Union and delivered between 1974 and 1975. 600 ordered in 1976 from the Soviet Union were delivered between 1977 and 1979 (the vehicles were probably produced in Czechoslovakia). 2,150 were ordered in 1982 from the Soviet Union and delivered between 1982 and 1989 (the vehicles were probably previously in Soviet service). 1,500 were in service as of 1990, 500 as of 1995, 2000 and 2002. All destroyed or scrapped.

The 115mm U-5TS, or 2A20, is a smoothbore gun firing fin-stabilised projectiles and is installed in the T-62 MBT. It has no muzzle brake but is fitted with a bore evacuator and most installations are equipped with a light alloy thermal sleeve. Manual loading limits the rate of fire to about 4 or 5 rds/min but the spent propellant cases are ejected from the turret rear by a mechanism actuated by the gun recoil. The gun is used with two-plane stabilisation equipment.

The gun is effective out to a range of about 3,000 m and the length of the gun tube is 5,700 mm. The APFSDS round fired by the U-5TS can penetrate 300 mm of armour set at an angle of 0° at 1,000 m.
