At the farnbourough international air show I had a discussion with the sales manager of KAI there and he told me that they're negotiating now with the Iraqi Army for the sale of KAI Surion helicopters.

better in which way ? i don't see a need for this little toy
the got the Eurochopter in the light heli role for recon and training ,and got the Mi-171 for medium and heavy roles for transporting troops and supplies
these planes have no role to play in the Iraqi military except for VIP transportation maybe ? even for that role there are better helicopter in the market + these planes are useless in the current conflict as they carry less troops ,and supplies than the Mi-171's have not offensive capabilities while the mi-171 can carry guided and unguided rockets and bombs .

still Mi-17 is a better choice for Iraq's navy as they have longer range and can carry external fuel tanks and internal fuel tanks and search radar and they will have commonality with Iraqi's fleet of mi-17's Mi-35's and to some extent the future Mi-28's which means training will be easier cost less to operate and availability of parts
the Mexican navy uses them
and if Iraq needs a more dedicated naval planes there are many more dedicated naval European Russian and Chines planes in the market

it is more safe for our troops then mi17 I think its can carry un guide rockets also

The sales manager spoke of the competition against the Mi17.

But from what I understood The Iraqis have been looking for several roles to fill:

-Search and Rescue (they did not buy the AB412s) - about 12x helos
-VIP helicopter squadron (once again no choice made) about 12x helos
-Maritime Patrol and Strike (once again no choice made). about 12x helos
-Replacement for the 16x AB205s

Overall there's a requirement for about 50 such helos in total.

Still the man did not claim that the Iraqis bought it... just that they are negotiating.

I personally think these "luxury purchases" will be left for another day... now Iraq needs attack helos, Mi17s and an effective attack aircraft as well as air defences and MBTs for urban combat...

I think that all of these plans now will be on hold.
