the americans will punish iraq if we buy S-400.
its a far safer bet to quietly buy FD-2000... even though its an inferior system.

the government is completely overwhelmed by the anti government protests. I think one of the major cuts will be to any "big purchases" of air defence systems or aircraft. if the government wants to survive they have to show people some progress in the towns and villages of the country after 16 years of misery.

12, 2019 12:43 pmthe government is completely overwhelmed by the anti government protests.

Just to correct you salahuddin.
Saddam didn't actually pay up for most of the weapons he bought in the 1980s. The debts accumulated. They took on enormous amounts of interest so by 2003 Iraq's debt was over $130Bn (on a very small economy)
After 2003, the US strong armed most of the state debtors to write off the debt Iraq owed. So whilst those countries wrote off the debts... which was helpful for Iraq. Commercial debtors didn't... so even housing projects built commissioned in the late 1970s (before saddam became president) and completed in the early 1980s... are being paid off now!
The world learned a powerful lesson not to trust the Iraqis in financial transactions. So Iraq today struggles to raise debt to pay for reconstruction of its civilian infrastructure let alone anything else. Everyone (including the US) demand payment up front for anything. despite that Iraq did borrow a lot...
so whilst Iraqi debt fell to a "managable" $75bn by 2013 (buoyed by writeoffs and high oil prices)... the 2014 daesh war and drop in oil prices plunged the country back into debt... And even that was not enough.
Today Even construction companies working in Iraq demand money up front, and regularly stop working in the middle of projects because the Iraqis don't pay up. Iraq gets zero credit from anyone except IMF/WB and a few other countries... but commercial banks generally keep a wide berth.
I work in the medical industry. We've had Iraqi hospital buyers calling us (including kimadiya the quasi state buyer of medicines and equipment) attempting to buy medical equipment on credit. Naturally we told them to suck a lemon. Everyone else does the same... or if they give credit... they soon learn their lesson.
