The first transonic jet in service with Iraq, with a long and illustrious combat record mainly with the Republican Air Force.

This forum covers the entire period of service of the aircraft from 1956-1982. مناقشة مكافحة 1956 حتي 1982

Some information and images of Iraqi hunters

Iraq ordered the Hunters in 1955 (one year after they entered RA service) and the first Hunters Iraq received were the F6 fighter versions.

Here's some history of the development of the original RAF F1 into the definitive F6 variant
ts short range was crippling for the new British fighter, with a maximum flight endurance of about an hour. On 8 February 1956, a flight of eight Hunters was redirected to another airfield due to inclement weather. Six aircraft ran out of fuel and crashed, with one pilot killed. One of the aircraft that landed ran out of fuel while taxiing.[4] On the positive side, the aircraft possessed good handling characteristics and even the early F 1 version would exceed sonic speed in a 30°-40° dive at full throttle from 40,000 ft (12,192 m) and above with comparatively minor trim changes.

The first Hunter prototype was fitted with an afterburning Avon RA.7R with 9,600 lbf (42.70 kN) of thrust and other aerodynamic refinements (most noticeably a pointed nose). Dubbed Hunter Mk 3, on 7 September 1953 it set a speed record of 722.2 mph (628.1 kn, 1,163.2 km/h) over a 1.86 mi (1.62 nmi, 3 km) course.
To address the problem of range, a production Hunter F 1 was fitted with a modified wing which featured bag-type fuel tanks in the leading edge and "wet" hardpoints. This increased the internal fuel capacity from 337-414 Imp gals (404-497 US gal, 1,533-1,833 l). In addition, a single 100 Imp gal (120 US gal, 454 l) external fuel tank could be carried under each wing.[4] The resulting Hunter F 4 first flew on 20 October 1954, entering service in March 1955. A distinctive Hunter feature added on the F 4 was the pair of blisters under the cockpit, which collected spent ammunition links to prevent airframe damage. Crews dubbed them "Sabrinas" after the contemporary movie star. The Sapphire-powered version of the F 4 was designated the Hunter F 5. Although the Sapphire did not suffer from the flameout problems of the Avon and had better fuel economy, it had other problems and the Sapphire-powered Hunters had many engine failures; those versions had very short service lives. The RAF elected to persevere with the Avon in order to simplify supply and maintenance, since the same engine was also used by the Canberra bomber.
The RAF had long wanted more thrust then was available from the Avon 100 series; after the brief flirtation with afterburning on the prototype WB 188, the decision was made to install a bigger engine without afterburner. Rolls-Royce developed the Avon 200 series engine. This was almost wholly a new design, with a new compressor which had no surge problems, annular combustion chamber, and improved fuel control system. The resulting Avon 203 produced 10,000 lbf (44.48 kN) of thrust and was fitted to XF 833, which became the first Hunter F 6. Some other revisions on the F 6 included a revised fuel tank layout, the centre fuselage tanks being replaced by new ones in the rear fuselage, and the "Mod 228" wing, which has a distinctive "dogtooth" leading edge notch to alleviate the pitch-up problem, and four "wet" hardpoints, finally giving the aircraft a good ferry range. The notch reduced spanwise flow of air and prevented tip stalling.

Where the two governments British and Iraqi agreed to get the Iraqi air force aircraft type Hawker Hunter and that the U.S. government was financing the deal, from the British Royal Air Force (RAF) stocks. In April 1957 Iraq was obtained the first batch of aircraft consisting of 15 of the aircrafts Hawker Hunter F Mk 6. Where they were handed over to the No. Sixth Squadron.

The British actually donated 16 Hawker Hunter F.Mk.6s to Iraq.

Sadly, one of the aircraft, serial number 399, crashed in the English Channel during pilot training in the UK, while flown by 1st Lt G Mahmmoud, on 20 November 1956. The pilot ejected safely but landed in cold water and died of hypothermia.

That's why No.6 Squadron initially operated only 15 aircraft (after these arrived in Iraq, in April 1957).

If i may ask , is there any information of how many Hunters were still in service in 1980 ? I understand that by then they were used in an OCU unit only ? Did they took part in any operational flights during the subsequent war?

One source on the net gives 51 Mk-59s and TMk-69s delivered to Iraq (the F6 are given as retired/lost by 1967) , with allegedly 19-20(?!) lost during the Yom Kippur war when they were send to help the arab coalition. Is this accurate ?

Thank you. :)

Thanks Raaft.

May i ask how many were lost in the 1967 6 days war aswell? Some sources say 5, others say 15...
Were the Mk6 still on training duties in 1990-91 , or were retired by then ?
Would you think , considering combat losses and the inevitable attrition , that about 25-30 FGA/FGR59 would be a reasonable figure for how many would be still on hand in 1980? ( discounting those Mk6 and TMk69 on training , perhaps a dozen of them too?)

I'm slightly late, but hope not 'too late' to address Mack's questions:

During the June 1967 War, the IrAF lost exactly 1 Hunter destroyed on the ground (it was hit by Vautours at H-3, on the afternoon of 5 June 1967), 1 crashed on take-off (at H-3, on 6 June 1967, pilot KIA), and 1 shot down in air combat (over H-3, on 7 June 1967, pilot KIA). Total: 3.

I researched this topic with plenty of Iraqi sources and for years, and nobody there can recall nor is there any sort of documentation confirming any other loss (arguably, the Israelis claimed more - 'at least 5, probably up to 7' - as shot down or destroyed on the ground, but no other but the 3 losses mentioned above occurred indeed).
Were the Mk6 still on training duties in 1990-91 , or were retired by then ?
All 15 Hunter F.Mk.6s originally obtained in 1958 were upgraded to F.Mk.59 standard already before the June 1967 War. Therefore, there were no F.Mk.6s as such left in Iraq already as of May 1967.
Would you think , considering combat losses and the inevitable attrition , that about 25-30 FGA/FGR59 would be a reasonable figure for how many would be still on hand in 1980? ( discounting those Mk6 and TMk69 on training , perhaps a dozen of them too?)
12-16 at most.
