Iraq signed a $181M+$75M+$23M ($279M) deal with the US swiftships shipbuilder to build a fleet of 15 patrol boats for the Iraqi Navy. The average cost of each boat is $18.7M (slightly cheaper than the Saettia Mk4s which are $25M, but those are more capable ships).

The first of these (PB301) entered service with the Iraqi navy in September 2010, with the remainder arriving before the end of 2011.

The boats are 35m high speed craft.

Swiftships Model 35PB1208 E-1455 specifications include:

Hull Length: 115’-0” / 35.06 m
Beam: 23’ 9-1/2” / 7.25 m
Max Draft (Navigational): 8’-6” / 2.59 m
Depth (Midship): 11’-10” / 3.61 m
Engine Package: 3 MTU 16V2000 Marine Diesels
Propulsors: 3 Propellers

ABS Classification: A1-HSNC-Coastal Naval Craft – AMS.

Water Capacity: 1000 Gallons / 3,785 Liters
Fuel Capacity: 7,000 Gallons / 26,495 Liters
Maximum Range: 1,500 Nautical Miles @ 12 knots
Endurance: 6 Days
Accommodations: 21 Crew, 4 Officers

Carries: RIB Willard aluminum hull high-speed 7 meter jet Rigid Inflatable Boat
Armament: MSI International DS30M-A2 30mm remotely-operated gun system, .50 cal/ 12.7mm machine gun, 2×7.62 machine guns.

MSI’s 30mm RWS system will be very consequential. As South Korea has proven several times, a patrol boat equipped with a main gun that integrates advanced sensors, ballistic computing, and RWS control will severely punish or sink enemy vessels that depend on hand-aimed guns of similar or greater calibers.

This triple-screw diesel-powered patrol boat can be refueled at sea using side by side procedures, and runs on #2 diesel fuel. The hull and superstructure are constructed of aluminum alloy, all welded, in accordance with approved codes. The hull includes 7 watertight bulkheads forming 8 watertight compartments. The superstructure has an enclosed upper bridge with open bridge wings for armament and navigation capability, with an enclosed pilothouse forward.

The boat can comfortably undertake at-sea missions for up to 6 days, with an expected operational time of about 1,500 hours of operation per year. Weather survivability includes Sea State 5 survival at the best heading, and full operational capability at Sea State 3 including 20 knot patrol speed and 10 knot sustained loitering speed for 12 hours. In calm water the boat is reasonably fast, 30 knots (about 34.5 mph/ 55.5 kmh) maximum speed at full load.

second swiftships delivered.

Military Sealift Command delivers patrol boat for Iraqi navy

Military Sealift Command-chartered heavy lift crane ship MV Ocean Titan delivered the second of a new class of U.S.-built patrol boats to Manama, Bahrain, today. The 115-foot boat is destined for Iraq, where it will be turned over to the Iraqi navy and used primarily to patrol coastal waters and provide security for the country's oil platforms.

This is the second of an expected 15 identical vessels being built for and delivered to the Iraqi navy in support of U.S. and Iraqi efforts to reconstitute Iraq's ability to enforce its maritime sovereignty and security. The Iraqi navy acquired the boats as part of the U.S. Navy's Foreign Military Sales Program.

"Our foreign partners rely on the U.S. Navy's expertise in combatant craft acquisition," said Rear Adm. David Lewis, who, as the Navy's program executive officer for ships, oversees the acquisition of all U.S. Navy surface ships. "This assistance represents a commitment for continued cooperation between the United States and our partners." Because the boat was designed to operate within 200 miles from shore, it was not equipped to make the more than 11,000-mile, open-ocean voyage to its final destination in Iraq from the shipyard where it was built in Morgan City, La., on its own power.

This is where MSC came in.

"MSC has a long history of chartering specialized commercial vessels to transport U.S. navy ships across the ocean and of overseeing those lifts from pick-up to delivery," said Timothy Pickering, cargo project officer in MSC's Sealift Program. "The most well-known of these moves was the lift bringing USS Cole home to the U.S. from Yemen following the October 2000 terrorist attack that rendered the ship unable to sail." MSC headquarters' Sealift Program received the requirement to transport the Iraqi patrol boat on Oct. 7 and awarded the contract for the lift to the 390-foot Ocean Titan just ten days later. Only four weeks after that, Ocean Titan and its cargo arrived safely in Bahrain.

While the patrol boat is in Bahrain, a team of personnel from the U.S. Navy's Program Executive Office Ships and the commercial shipbuilder that built the patrol boat will complete work on it before sailing it to Iraq for turnover to the Iraqi navy.

The Iraqi navy christened the first of these 15 patrol boats Sept. 26 during an Iraq Navy Day ceremony at Umm Qasr Naval Base, Iraq. The patrol boats have a top speed of 30 knots and will be crewed by up to 12 Iraqi sailors.

MSC will deliver the next patrol boat in early 2011.

MSC operates approximately 110 noncombatant, civilian-crewed ships that replenish U.S. Navy ships, conduct specialized missions, strategically preposition combat cargo at sea around the world and move military cargo and supplies used by deployed U.S. forces and coalition partners.

Navy Delivers Two Patrol Boats to Iraq

The U.S. Navy delivered two 35-meter patrol boats to the Iraqi navy's Umm Qasr naval facility Jan. 26.

The vessels are the second and third such craft to be delivered to the Iraqi Navy as part of planned 15-ship foreign military sales case managed by the Support Ships, Boats and Craft Program Office in the U.S. Navy's Program Executive Office (PEO) Ships. Procurement of these ships represents a continued cooperation commitment between the United States and Iraqi governments.

"We are excited to deliver the second and third patrol boats of this class to the Iraqi navy," said Program Manager Frank McCarthey. "This addition to their fleet will help reinforce Iraq's maritime strength in the littorals."

Using a design chosen by the Iraqi government, the 35-meter patrol boats are heavily-armed, fast-attack craft designed to support a crew of 25 for six days; and can reach speeds of 30 knots. The ships will be used to enforce the nation's maritime sovereignty and protect off-shore oil platforms.

Nine of the 25-meter, armored patrol boats are currently under construction, and negotiations are underway for three additional vessels.

PEO Ships, an affiliated PEO of the Naval Sea Systems Command, manages the design and construction of all U.S. Navy surface ships as well as a wide range of small boats and craft for U.S. agencies and allied nations. Since its creation in November 2002, PEO Ships has delivered 38 major warships and hundreds of small boats and craft from more than 20 shipyards and boat builders across the United States.

More three 35-meter patrol boats, with an option for three additional 35-meter patrol boats and associated technical services for the Iraqi navy.
Swiftships Shipbuilders, LLC, Morgan City, La., is being awarded a $42,181,000 modification to previously awarded contract (N00024-09-C-2256) for the detail design and construction of three 35-meter patrol boats, with an option for three additional 35-meter patrol boats and associated technical services for the Iraqi navy.

This contract modification includes options which, if exercised, would bring the cumulative value of this contract modification to $83,479,000.

Work will be performed in Morgan City, La. (60 percent); Detroit, Mich. (30 percent); Ocean Springs, Miss. (8 percent); and Charlottesville, Va. (2 percent), and is expected to be completed by August 2012. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year.

The Naval Sea Systems Command, Washington, D.C., is the contracting activity.

thanks for the update Tango!

very interesting that Iraq is seemingly increasing the Swiftships fleet to 21 boats.
now my idea...

these boats are of similar dimension and weight as an OSA.

Length:
swiftship: 35m
OSA: 37m

Beam:
swiftship: 7.2m
OSA: 7.6m

weight (full load):
swiftship: 200 Tonnes
OSA: 210 Tonnes.

Now the OSA had enough space to accomodate the very bulky fire control systems as well as 4 extremely bulky SS-N-2 Styx anti ship missiles (not to mention a 30mm cannon turret).

Using modern technologies and missiles it is very much possible (in my view) to retrofit anti ship and anti aircraft capability to these swiftships boats in future.

1- The mast is empty and has plenty of space for radars
2- The "RHIB" area at the rear deck has enough space for 2-4 medium anti ship missiles.
3-

there's certainly no space for dedicated air defences on the boat if SSMs are fitted. However it is possible to have "three types" of swiftships boats.
1- "air defence" fitted with SAMS,
2- "attacker" fitted with SSMs.
3- "standard" fitted with RHIBs

Hayder, thanks and welcome.

What you said the former defense minister had spoken before, during the celebration ceremony of accepted of the first boat. see below link:
مشيرا إلى أن الزورق متطور ومسلح بشكل جيد، وبالإمكان تطوير القدرة التسليحية للزورق في المستقبل من خلال تجهيزه بمنصات لإطلاق الصواريخ.

But the process of modification or the sense of cost development of these boats to make that missile boats will be less expensive than buying specialized missile boats, and also is complex technically process and on the whole the general trend in the world navies is the shift to ships more stable and larger between the patrol vessels or OPV (Offshore patrol vessel) like Iraqi Navy patrol vessel Saettia MK 4 to missile corvette ... but the problem of the Iraqi navy remains in the rule of geographical and policy did not allow Iraq to be a suitable seacoasts.

U.S. Navy Delivers Sixth Coastal Patrol Boat to Iraq

UMM QASR, Iraq --- The Navy formally delivered the sixth 35-meter patrol boat (P-305) to the Iraqi navy at the Umm Qasr naval facility in Iraq Nov. 3, after the ship successfully completed reactivation in Bahrain, Oct. 23.

The seamless reactivation enabled delivery to an Iraqi naval base one week ahead of schedule.

"The team has once again succeeded in lending their expertise in boat construction and acquisition to deliver another quality asset to our international partners," said Frank McCarthey, program manager for Support Ships, Boats and Craft. "We look forward to officially transferring custody of P-305 to the Iraqi Navy to aid in their mission of securing their maritime sovereignty."

The delivery of P-305 follows the successful delivery and transfer of custody of P-304 and P-306 in August this year. The next coastal patrol craft is scheduled to deliver to Iraq in December.

The Support Ships, Boats and Craft Program Office in the U.S Navy's Program Executive Office (PEO), Ships, is managing the acquisition of the patrol boats as a foreign military sales case. There are currently six patrol boats remaining under construction in this case.

The U.S. Navy and Swiftships Shipbuilders, LLC, Morgan City, La., are supporting the Iraqi Navy in the procurement and construction of up to fifteen 35-meter armored patrol boats. The boat is armed with a 30mm gun weapon system, provides for a crew of 25 and is capable of reaching 30 knots.

PEO Ships is currently managing the design and construction of all U.S. Navy destroyers, amphibious ships, special mission and support ships, as well as a wide range of small boats and craft for U.S. agencies and allied nations. Since its creation in November 2002, PEO Ships has delivered more than 40 warships and hundreds of small boats and craft from more than 20 shipyards and boat builders across the United States.
