New Al-Muthana Air Base, Iraq (AFNS) -- Iraqi air force officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to open three new facilities, including a communications building, a communications equipment facility and a medical clinic Dec. 11 here.

Tech. Sgt. Amy Everhard, a New Al-Muthana Air Base Transition Team member, was on hand to assist with equipment installation and testing for the new communication buildings, as well as to see the finishing touches put on the structures.

"Actually being able to see and participate in the success of the ribbon cutting ceremony was fantastic," Sergeant Everhard said. "Seeing the Iraqi air force being built up, if only one building at a time, really highlights that we do see the fruits of our labors."

Sergeant Everhard said the communications equipment facility houses the start of a robust network infrastructure that adds to the New Al-Muthana AB ability to provide Iraq-wide computer network connectivity. As it stands, much of the Iraqi air force must rely on hand-carried letters for official correspondence. The ability to communicate via e-mail means productivity can rise exponentially.

Master Sgt. David Smith, a New Al-Muthana AB medical adviser, said the medical facility took several years to complete. His involvement during the past 11 months helped put the finishing touches on the largest, most capable medical facility in the entire Iraqi air force. The center has state-of-the-art equipment, technology and the capability to house patients for extended periods.

In addition, the emergency room in the new building will allow the Iraqi air force to care for various traumatic injuries without having to rely on any outside agencies.

"For three years the Iraqi medical personnel have stared at that building wondering and waiting for the opportunity to work there...Now that dream is a reality," Sergeant Smith said. "It's like having a child... The hope and opportunity is immeasurable. The 1200 people of (New Al-Muthana AB) need and deserve this capability."

Brig. Gen. Scott Hanson, the director of the Iraqi Training and Advisory Mission - Air Force and the commander of the 321 Air Expeditionary Wing, said he is confident in the Iraqi air force's ability to bolster their infrastructure.

"Projects like these are the embodiment of Operation New Dawn and are the reason why American forces are here," General Hanson said. "The fully operational capacity of these facilities marks another milestone towards developing a self-sustaining air force for Iraq."

BAGHDAD - The Iraqi air force took one more step toward self-sufficiency with the recent acquisition of a European Organization for the Exploitation of Meteorological Satellite weather data reception and visualization system.

The new system was installed this month at the Iraqi Air Operations Center in Baghdad Iraq. Training on the new system is being conducted by IPS MeteoStar, the contractor who sold the equipment.

The receiver pulls weather data from EUMETSAT into the computer systems installed by IPS MeteoStar. There it allows the Iraqi weather officers to manipulate the data to generate weather maps for use in various products, from flight briefings to local weather forecasts.

“This system provides real-time aviation weather information as the basis for decision support for all meteorological support activities spanning Iraq. The Iraqi air force weather officers will have the toolset they need to integrate important operational weather decision-making products directly into existing and future Iraqi weather systems,” said Maj. James Bono, Iraqi Training and Advisory Missions senior weather advisor deployed from Sagamore Hill Solar Observatory a geographically separate unit of Hanscom Air Force Base, Mass.

The purchase is part of an ongoing plan to provide the Iraqi air force airmen with the tools and skills to run their own weather forecast center.

“Right now they’re relying on our data,” explained Bono

With more training from U.S. Air Force Airmen, Bono said the Iraqis should be self-sufficient with their own equipment.

“They will support their own mission, their own aircraft, and provide protection for their airfields,” he said.

The process started last October with the purchase of four Ellason Weather Radar 600’s.

The first of these radars was installed at the Baghdad Iraqi Air Operations Center where the Iraqis have been training on system ever since.

“It’s the first Iraqi weather radar system in the country,” said Bono, “It gives them the ability to track and observe rain showers and thunderstorms.”

But the Ellason Weather Radar 600 isn’t the only system to provide real-time weather data.

The Iraqi air force currently uses a TMQ-53 Weather Observation System on loan from the U.S. Air Force, but recently purchased eight new units to be set up throughout Iraq. Once the new systems are in place, the only thing missing for the Iraqis to run their own weather operation will be training.

That’s where Tech. Sgt. Stephen Hale of the 22nd Expeditionary Weather Squadron advising weather trainer for Iraqi air operations comes in.

The 16-year Air Force veteran from Fort Riley, Kan., makes sure Iraqi officers receive the training they need to run their own operations.

“Their meteorology background is different from ours,” he said. “Over these last five months we’ve tried to bridge the gap from the training they’ve received previously to what the capabilities are on the U.S side.”

Once the Iraqis are trained, Hale will work with his Iraqi partners to ensure they can produce all the weather products they need for their mission.

“This is a whole new side for me getting to teach meteorology,” he said. “I get to teach these young Iraqi weather officers to integrate the information they have into planning and executing missions,” says Hale, “It takes it to a whole new level when you’re helping a department stand up from nothing.”

The E600 is the smallest, most affordable and portable weather radar system available. The E600’s exclusive combination of power and portability make this system the number one choice in tactical weather radar systems. Weather sensitive operations rely on the E600 to deliver accurate, real-time information including:
Location of precipitation
Intensity of precipitation
Direction of cell movement
Speed of cell movement
While the E600 has been designed for maximum portability it also has been engineered to withstand the rigors of front line duty. The E600 is in service in some of the most difficult environments around the world today.

Easy to use WeatherScout 600 software running on the familiar Windows XP platform.
Ruggedized for portable operation.
Mast and rooftop tripod standard.
Can be installed and operational in 30 minutes
or less.
Optimized for remote, standalone operation.
Full network capability.
Auto mapping feature for creating graphical overlays.
Proven, battle tested design.
Compact 18” flat panel
antenna standard, 30” optional.

TAJI, Iraq - The Iraqi Army Aviation Command held a ribbon cutting ceremony here Jan. 17 to formally begin operations in their newest maintenance facility.

The massive aircraft hangar is a $9.8 million project that began in 2009. The collaboration between the IqAAC and the United States provided a maintenance hangar large enough for current and growing future aviation mission requirements.

“At more than 240 feet long and 50 feet tall, the hangar is the largest maintenance hangar in Iraq and the largest clear-span building in the entire Middle East,” said Capt. Christopher Beaver, 321st Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron Advisory Group chief who worked closely with the Iraqis during the construction as an advisor.

Captain Beaver said the hangar was built by a local Iraqi company and managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers with Air Force advisors monitoring the project, advocating requirements on behalf of the Iraqis.

“As advisors, we all know the lasting impact and full results of our efforts today won't be seen for years to come. So it's always satisfying to have such a present and visual reminder today of the progress our Iraqi friends are making,” said the captain originally from Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and is stationed at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers, Europe.

Staff Sgt. Bryan Washington, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, is an operations manager from Royal Air Force Mildenhall, England. He is currently deployed as a civil engineering advisor for the 321st EMSAG, and has been working on this project for his entire deployment.

“When I first arrived it was only half finished. A lot of the major issues we faced involved getting the materials delivered here to Taji. Once we got over that, the contractors worked very hard to get everything done and working,” said Sgt. Washington. “To be able to hand this over to the Iraqis and for them to have a fully operational facility is an amazing feeling.”

Lt. Col. Ralph Okubo Jr., 721st Air Expeditionary Advisory Squadron commander, said the hangar bay is large enough to support multiple airframes and activities simultaneously. It is also part of a larger complex that includes numerous offices and maintenance shops.

The corps of engineers is also managing the construction of an air traffic control tower, a bulk fuel station and a squadron operations building, all located at Taji Air Force Base. Each of these facilities is expected to be completed and fully operational before Dec. 31st, when all U.S. troops are expected to withdraw from Iraq.

Tech. Sgt. Rickie Jones, originally from Baltimore, Md., is an electronic warfare technician from the 755th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron at Davis Monthan Air Force Base, Ariz. He is currently deployed as an advisor with the 721st AEAS at Taji. His job here is to help the Iraqi military to move into this new facility, and to get the right people in the right places, doing the right jobs.

Sergeant Jones said Iraqi maintainers will use the new hangar to make several modifications to their helicopters to bring the communications equipment into alignment with other military platforms. In other words, to make the helicopter radios talk to the ground radios, increasing military capabilities and in turn, a making the country safer and more secure.

Tech. Sgt. Bryan Felix, 721st AEAS advisor, originally from Ebensburg, Pa., is an aircraft armament systems (weapons) specialist deployed from the 388th Fighter Wing, Hill AFB, Utah.

“In the future, their aircraft are going to have bigger weapons. This hangar has a weapons shop in it where they can perform back-shop maintenance. This will give them the same capabilities as the U.S. Air Force,” said Sergeant Felix.

Up until this point, the IqAF and IqAAC were working out of a very small hangar that could only fit one aircraft at a time. All additional critical maintenance was conducted on the tarmac which could be a hindrance due to the amount of aircraft at the air base.

“This maintenance hangar is just part of our efforts to do everything we can to hunt down terrorists wherever they may be,” said the IqAAC deputy commander (name withheld).

Brig. Gen. Anthony Rock, 321st Air Expeditionary Wing commander, and Iraq Training and Advisory Mission – Air Force director, said the ribbon-cutting ceremony was a celebration of the partnership the building symbolizes.

“It represents the many Iraqi and U.S. Airmen that stand tall and proud. Under this roof you will grow your youngest skilled maintenance technicians, develop your future managers, and produce an autonomous aircraft maintenance organization,” said General Rock. “We will work with you as brothers to make this dream a reality.”

Iraq bought another Radar from Loockheed Martin

Hi Everyone

Iraq has ordered a new radar system from the US worth 28 million from Lockheed Martin , the DID article is not sure which Radar System Iraq ordered, in fact Iraq ordered the AN/TPS-77 long-range air surveillance radar system. Why because this is the third Radar Iraq has ordered, the first was in 2006 the second in 2009 , and now the third 2011. The most interesting thing is that the 2009 order specifies that the Radar is in fact AN/TPS-77

"Mortaritaville" ،

.
