With possible F-16s delivery at the end of this year, the L159 would be no-brainer choice! It's cheap, off the shelf option. T-50 is awesome airframe indeed, but we have to queue for it!! Do you guys think that we have time to waste waiting? seriously tho !!

F16s won't be delivered this year. If Iraq's lucky they may get a couple at the end of 2013, but full delivery 2014-2015.

I am not sure about this.
These cannot stop ANY neighbouring air force from attacking iraq.
They are useful for training the pilots at least, and maybe some ground support for the army.

but for air defence. no.

Aesos--The last time a straight-wing fighter ruled the skies was in WW2. Since the Korean war it has been high-performance swept/delta-wing airframes that dominated air combat. You can mount fancy missiles on any platform that flies, but that doesn't mean it can deliver the desired performance.
The absolute first priority for Iraq is a fighter suitable for the air superiority role.

what we need urgently now are :
A/ advanced trainer
B/ quickly delivered "off the shelf option"
C/ Mission capability
D/ Tag price & Running cost
but all these elements together in mind and tell me what's the obvious choice would be?

Many countries around us have very fancy toys, but I bet if the sh!t hit the fan the picture wont be very pleasant !

Desert Scorpion--I'm interested to know why you put [advanced trainer] as a first requirement...You can advance-train your pilots abroad faster than at home if you factor in the procurement time. It is not uncommon for air forces to do this. It's not ideal, but if you do this abroad, you free your cash for the actual combat platforms.

I put [advanced trainer] as a first requirement simply because this is what we NEED now ASAP.
We both know this is not what we wish for or want to see in the hands of our boys. but we have to be realistic.
Sending cadets abroad is not money and time wasting process only, it's knowledge wasting too. by take the easy option you are leaving your ground crews with no proper training at all! general maintenance includes: mechanics, avionics, communications, weapon systems, sheet metal works..etc
not to mention other supporting roles out side the warehouse.. flight line team, flight control tower, weather and radar.. so on

MoD has bought the multirole fighter "F16" Oddly, didn't buy the traine
r!

Desert Scorpion--I totally appreciate and share your concerns and interest in seeing Iraq build the air force on solid foundations in terms of organically trained crews. This, however, should not confuse our understanding of what CAPABILITIES are needed urgently, vs enablers that are good to have in the long run. In my opinion, training crews abroad+buying the actual combat platforms is a useful GAP FILLER, until we can build the organic training/human/maintenance infrastructure.

Most important thing here that we both concerned in the best interest of our new IqAF. the only differences I can see are the set of priorities.. Gap filler, is a term you can use when you have blank area between existing objects. The statues of the IqAf in matter of Jet field is all the way balnk, T-6A is our top of the ladder planee

Agreed.
FWIW, Gap filler can also be used for time; in this case the filler needs to span the gap is between the departure of the USAF, and the rise of a fully independent IqAF. Cheers!
