Iraq begins receiving Su-25 combat aircraft to fight ISIL

Iraq has received the first batch of Sukhoi Su-25 'Frogfoot' ground attack aircraft that have been supplied by Russia, the Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on 29 June.

Video footage was released of at least one single-seat Su-25 being offloaded from an Antonov An-124 'Condor' strategic transport aircraft at an undisclosed airbase in Iraq, with the MoD saying that five aircraft had been delivered in all.

According to Iraqi Air Force (IqAF) commander Lieutenant General Anwar Hama Amin, these aircraft should enter operational service in the next three to four days, "to support army units to help fight the terrorist [ISIL]/ISIS group".

Delivery of the first batch of an undisclosed number of Sukhoi aircraft comes just three days after Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki told the BBC's Arabic service that Russia was sending jets to help "destroy the terrorists' dens".

The IqAF does not currently operate the Su-25, leading to speculation that Russia may have supplied maintainers and pilots to help support Iraq's urgent operational requirement. There have also been rumours in the regional press that Islamic Republic of Iran (IRIAF) pilots might crew and support these aircraft (the IRIAF actually fields a number of Su-25s that were flown to Iran during the Gulf War in 1991), although there has been no official comment to substantiate this.

In disclosing the deal with Russia, al-Maliki criticised the United States saying he regretted ordering the 36 Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcon combat aircraft, deliveries of which have just begun.

"I'll be frank and say that we were deluded when we signed the contract [with the US]," al-Maliki said to the BBC, adding; "We should have sought to buy other jet fighters like British, French, and Russian to secure the air cover for our forces; if we had air cover we would have averted what had happened."

ANALYSIS

In disclosing the Russian shipment of combat jets to Iraq, al-Maliki referred only to 'Sukhois' prompting media sources to speculate as to whether these may be Su-24 'Fencer' strike platforms, or even Su-30MKI 'Flanker' fighters that had been returned to Russia from India.

Although the diminutive Su-25 is the oldest, slowest and, superficially speaking, least capable of the Sukhoi family, it is actually the aircraft that is best suited to the current situation in Iraq (although it remains unclear if other Sukhoi types will also be delivered by Russia and/or Belarus).

Often described as a 'flying tank', the Su-25 is the Russian equivalent of the US's much-lauded Fairchild-Republic A-10 Thunderbolt II in that it is designed to loiter over the battlefield with a wide array and heavy load of weaponry to provide close air support (CAS) to troops on the ground.

While the Su-25 does have a very rudimentary laser-guided weapons capability, most of the munitions it carries are classed as 'dumb' in that they are not guided. This however, need not be too much of an issue as the Su-25 flies relatively slow and low to the ground making it a highly accurate weapons platform. It is also equipped with a 30 mm cannon to provide accurate and low-yield kinetic effects.

However, while the Su-25's 'low and slow' mission profile affords it a high degree of accuracy, it also makes it vulnerable to ground fire. To counter this, the Su-25 is heavily armoured and all-but-impervious to most ground fire, but while it is equipped with chaff and flares to help guard against surface-to-air missiles it is vulnerable to the latest-generation man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS).

During the Russian-Georgian War in mid-2008, both sides lost Su-25s to MANPADS, and with a number of Iraqi Army helicopters having already fallen victim to ISIL/ISIS ground fire (it has yet to be confirmed if MANPADS were used) the IqAF will have to be especially wary of the threat when it comes to deploying the aircraft over the battlefield.

On the subject of al-Maliki's reported comments to the BBC that he regrets Iraq procuring the 36 Lockheed Martin F-16 Fighting Falcons from the US, it should be noted that, in the IqAF's force structure at least, the F-16 is intended to be a top-end air-defence fighter rather than a CAS platform. As such, it would only have had limited utility in the current crisis.

Of far more utility would be the 24 Beechcraft AT-6 Texan II turboprops and 24 Korean Aerospace Industries FA-50 light attack jets, which Iraq recently ordered but has yet to receive. Having said that, the IqAF's 11 AGM-114 Hellfire-armed Cessna 208B Grand Caravan aircraft; and the Iraqi Army's four Mil Mi-35 'Hind' (with deliveries of the remaining 24 ongoing), 24 Airbus Helicopters EC635, and 24 armed Bell 407 JetRanger helicopters should provide a more-than-effective CAS capability. The army is also set to receive its first batch of Mil Mi-28NE 'Havoc' helicopters (15 are believed to be on order) before the end of the year.

بصراحة اخ امجد لا علم لي بنوع الطائرات الصينية (بدون طيار) ولكن ما اعرفه ان الطائرات وصلت لبغداد بعدد ١٦ طائرة والوفد الصيني كان ببغداد وقابل الماكي وبعد وقت قصير اشتغلت التلفونات على الجماعة يسئلونهم عن الطائرات (وانتة قيس)

اكد عضو لجنة الامن والدفاع في البرلمان السابق عباس البياتي، اليوم الاثنين، ان طائرات سوخي دخلت عملياتها العسكرية بقيادة طيارين عراقيين، نافياً وجود مستشارين من روسيا يعملون في العراق.

وقال البياتي لـ"المسلة" إن "طائرات سوخوي بدأت الدخول الفعلي بعملياتها العسكرية بقيادة طيارين عراقيين وهي توفر الحماية لحركة قطعاتنا".

واشار الى أن "الطائرات بدأت باستهداف تجمعات داعش وقطع الطريق اللوجستي وخطوط الإمداد عبر الحدود وهي تقوم بدور فعال إلى جانب الطائرات المروحية الأخرى"، مؤكدا إن "موازين القوى بدأت تميل لصالح القوات العراقية".

ونفى البياتي "وجود مستشارين روس يعملون بالعراق"، مبيناً أن "هذه الطائرات لا تحتاج إلى خبراء لان لدينا كوادر تستطيع العمل على هذا النوع من الطائرات خاصة وان أسلحتنا سابقا جميعها من المعسكر الشرقي".

يشار إلى أن وزارة الدفاع العراقية قد أعلنت، امس الأحد، عن وصول خمس طائرات مقاتلة روسية الصنع من نوع "سوخوي 25" لتعزيز القدرة القتالية للجيش العراقي والمشاركة في المعارك ضد التنظيمات الإرهابية.

وكانت لجنة الأمن والدفاع البرلمانية قد أعلنت اول، أمس السبت، عن وصول الوجبة الأولى من طائرات الـ" سوخوي" الروسية المكونة من 10 طائرات إلى مطارات العراق.

يشار إلى أن الناطق باسم القائد العام للقوات المسلحة الفريق قاسم عطا أكد في مؤتمر صحفي ظهر اليوم أن طائرات السوخوي الروسية ستدخل إلى المعركة خلال الساعات القليلة المقبلة.

ثلاث طائرات (سوخوي) تحلق في سماء بغداد للمرة الأولى

أفاد مصدر في قيادة القوة الجوية، اليوم الثلاثاء، بأن ثلاث طائرات سوخوي– 25 (SU-25) حلقت في سماء بغداد، فيما أشار إلى أن هذه الطلعات هي تجريبية تحت إشراف خبراء روس.

وقال المصدر في حديث إلى (المدى برس)، إن "ثلاث طائرات سوخوي– 25 (SU-25) أقلعت من قاعدة جوية غربي العاصمة بغداد، وحلقت فوق بغداد كطلعة تجريبية تحت إشراف خبراء روس".

وأضاف المصدر الذي طلب عدم الكشف عن اسمه، أن "هذه الطلعات الهدف منها الوقوف على جاهزية هذه الطائرات، وقدرتها على المشاركة في العمليات العسكرية الجارية الآن في العراق".

أكد السفير الروسي لدى العراق أن روسيا تنفذ صفقة بيع أسلحة ومعدات عسكرية إلى العراق

قال السفير الروسي لدى العراق إيليا مورغونوف في رد له على سؤال وجهه له أحد الصحفيين اليوم الثلاثاء إن روسيا تستمر في تنفيذ صفقة
أسلحة للعراق تم توقيعها في عام 2013، مضيفا أنه "سيتم توريد خمس إلى عشر طائرات قبل نهاية الصيف".

وكان الكسندر لوكاشيفيتش، المتحدث الرسمي باسم وزارة الخارجية الروسية، أبلغ الصحفيين، امس الاثنين، أن روسيا انتهت من تسليم العراق طائرات "سو 25 " التي تعاقد العراق على شرائها في وقت سابق.

وأعلنت وزارة الدفاع العراقية، في بيان لها صدر يوم الأحد، أن خمس مُقاتلات روسية من طراز "سوخوي 25" ، وصلت العراق، من روسيا ضمن صفقة بين البلدين، لتعزيز القدرة القتالية للجيش العراقي ضد الإرهاب.

عطا: 5 طارات سوخوي وصلت الى العراق وستباشر عملها

بغداد/ المسلة: اعلن الناطق الرسمي باسم القائد العام للقوات المسلحة قاسم عطاء، اليوم الثلاثاء، عن وصول 5 طائرات سوخوي الى العراق وستباشر عملها.

وقال عطا في تصريح تابعته "المسلة"، إن "5 طائرات سوخوي وصلت، اليوم الى العراق ودخلت الخدمة"، مبينا أن "الطائرات ستباشر عملها في دك اوكار الارهابيين".

وصول الوجبة الثانية من طائرات السوخوي الى الاراضي العراقية

وصلت الى الاراضي العراقية الوجبة الثانية من طائرات السوخوي عدد(5) بقيادة طياريين عراقيين وحلقت فوقسماء بغداد وهي مستعدة لتنفيذ كافة الواجبات وتقديم الدعم والاسناد الى القوات المسلحة.
